The Maine State Lottery was established in 1974 to aid the state’s general fund, which is utilized to support various programs and services for the citizens. In 1985, the first multi-state lottery was initiated in collaboration with New Hampshire and Vermont, giving birth to the Tri-State Megabucks. The first-ever Megabucks ticket was sold to then-New Hampshire Governor, John Sununu.

In 1994, the matrix of the game was altered from a pick 30 to a pick 36 game. Four years later, in 1998, it was changed again from a pick 36 to a pick 40 game. Over time, with the growing popularity of the game, the format was altered once more to a pick 6 of 42, with the addition of a bonus number that increased the chances of winning smaller jackpots.

Although it takes more time to reach larger jackpot amounts, the competition remains lower in the lottery game because it involves three smaller, less populated states. Additionally, there is a $30,000 second prize, and drawings are held three days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. The overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 5.9, and the cutoff time for buying tickets is 7:50 PM as the drawings are held at 8 PM.
