Where is Down East Maine?
Mainers often debate about the exact location of Down East Maine. Some believe it begins in Washington County, the easternmost county in the United States. Others argue that it starts at the Sullivan Bridge, which crosses Mount Desert Narrows but is still in Hancock County. Ellsworth is also known as the “Crossroads of Down East Maine.” Although we live closer to Ellsworth, I still consider ourselves as Down East Mainers.
Home isn’t just where you reside.
While the precise location of our permanent residence is considered interior Hancock County, I still believe we are Down Easters. We enjoy these lands whether it be fishing, hunting, boating, or camping. It’s all “home” to us.
Choosing a different route to Down East Maine.
The Down East Sunrise Trail is an 87-mile off-road corridor spanning Hancock and Washington County. It navigates through forests and marshes and crosses bridges above scenic brooks and rivers. The use of the trail system is based on the season, with snowmobile riding in the winter, and ATV and bicycle riding for summer and fall.
Head Down East
If you’re looking for a beautiful outdoor destination, Quoddy Head State Park in Lubec, Maine is worth a visit. Located just 4 miles off Route 189, this stunning park spans over 500 acres on the easternmost peninsula of the United States. The park offers incredible views of the coastline and wildlife watching opportunities. There are four interconnected trails within the park that you can explore. You’ll also find a lighthouse on the premises which has a small history museum inside. Quoddy Head State Park is a great place for a relaxing walk, a picnic, or a day of exploring nature. Camping facilities are available at nearby Coboscook State Park.
Where to eat Down East
There are numerous excellent restaurants to visit on a trip Down East. I will make sure to include them in future posts. One in particular that stands out is Helen’s Restaurant, located in Machias, Maine. Helen’s Restaurant has been serving locals and visitors to Down East Maine for many years. They offer fresh seafood and meat, as well as unique desserts made daily. They are especially well-known for their homemade pies. Situated directly on Main Street and just off the Down East Sunrise Trail, Helen’s Restaurant is easily accessible.
Lobster, lobster, lobster!
In Down East Maine, lobster is a staple food item and is usually consumed outside, not in a restaurant. Locals refer to it as lobster “feed”. My in-laws are particularly fond of the lobster feeds, so much so that they even enjoy it as their Christmas dinner. They cook at least 50 to 100 pounds of lobster per feed and save the leftovers for lobster rolls or seafood stew. If you are visiting the area and can’t attend a feed, make sure to visit a lobster pound for the best outdoor lobster dining experience.

In addition, Maine is renowned for its delicious seafood, blueberries, and maple syrup which are all produced locally.
