Stephen King offers classic rock to Maine’s local listeners.

Who is Stephen King?

Stephen King is an American author of horror, supernatural fiction, suspense, and fantasy novels. He was born on September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine, and began his writing career in the 1970s. King has published over 60 books, including “Carrie,” “The Shining,” “It,” and “The Stand,” many of which have been adapted into successful films and TV shows. He has won numerous awards for his work, including the National Medal of Arts and the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America. King is known for his vivid imagination and ability to create complex, relatable characters that readers can’t help but get invested in.

Beyond the books and movies, there is radio.

He also owns one of the few locally operated radio stations left in the country. And with large conglomerates such as Clear Channel controlling the airwaves, it’s rare to hear live and local music.

Found in the center of the logo would be the station’s official mascot Doug E. Graves, designed by Maine native Glenn Chadbourne.

Stephen King and his employees keep it real, and local.

Stephen King’s rock and roll station has a team of experienced deejays and news reporters who have worked for King for many years. They often share anecdotes of old times on air and have developed a great camaraderie among themselves. This gives the station a family-like vibe and makes it seem like a wonderful place to work.

Great music, and fun contests.

Not only is classic rock played 24/7, but there are some cool contests almost daily. Stephen King and his staff give away thousands of dollars in cash and prizes. As of this writing the current contest is a High-Low game, where a lucky caller number ten will get a guess at a set jackpot amount. The live deejay will give them a response of higher or lower than their guess. Faithful listeners will pay close attention, keeping track of all guesses. Another contest offers a chance to phone in when a particular “Classic rock song of the day” is played, with that listener winning a daily prize. We have seen everything from cash, trips, Red Sox tickets, and years back there was an opportunity for a new car.

My fortunate experience.

I was fortunate enough to participate in one of the station’s contest experiences. Although Stephen King was not present at the event, I managed to win a cash prize of $5000 by playing mini golf. If you click on the picture of me and the mascot Doug E. Graves, you can read about my successful day at the contest.

WKIT is a daily staple in many Mainer’s daily routines.

Many wake up to the sounds of classic rock provided by morning deejays Mark “the Shark” Young, and Don Simpson. They provide great music with a bit of humor while being in sync with each other. Afternoon entertainment is provided by veterans Jason the “Rock Dog”, and Scotty Moore, each bringing their niche to their 4-hour shift.

Stephen King gives back.

Stephen King and his team not only offer classic rock, local news, and weather updates but also extend their support to the community. They provide a Christmas tree during the holiday season for listeners to donate new unwrapped gifts for the underprivileged. Additionally, King and his wife Tabitha donate thousands of dollars every year to local schools and libraries.

Listen anywhere in the world

WKIT can be streamed globally via its app and listeners can request songs from anywhere.
