Although Ellsworth, Maine may appear as a small town, it technically qualifies as a city by definition.
Ellsworth is situated 30 miles south of Bangor, which houses the closest major airport in the region. From Ellsworth, it is an additional 9 miles to reach the head of Mount Desert Island, where Acadia National Park is located.

Ellsworth was incorporated as a town in 1800, named after Oliver Ellsworth, a prominent figure in the Constitutional Convention.
Flourishing throughout the 19th century as a center for shipbuilding, lumbering, and industry, the city achieved incorporation in 1869.
The 20th century brought its share of challenges with a massive flood in 1923, and The Great Fire, occurring in 1933, which devastated most of the downtown area.

With a population of approximately 9000 residents, Ellsworth serves as the crossroads of Down East Maine, and the Gateway to Acadia National Park.
It is the last stop on the journey to Mount Desert Island where one can find National Brand stores, chain restaurants serving fast foods, and discount shopping.
Ellsworth is home to a Kindergarten-8th grade school and an area High School attended by students from the surrounding rural communities and Ellsworth residents.

In 2010, the Frenchman Bay Conservancy joined forces with the City of Ellsworth to protect Branch Lake, the only source of drinking water in the city. The lake also is a great source of public recreation.
Branch Lake Public Forest offers a 1.3-mile looped hiking trail that meanders through the forest and ends at the lake. The hike usually takes 1-2 hours.
Birdsacre-Stanwood Wildlife Sanctuary’s 200-acre sanctuary offers a glimpse into the life of Cordelia J. Stanwood, a pioneer ornithologist and photographer. Hike through the trails, visit the museum dedicated to her work, and enjoy the beautiful gardens.
